3-Phase Systems and Rectification

Three-phase power is three sines spaced 120° apart; their sum is zero at every instant. In power transmission it delivers constant instantaneous power and allows smaller conductor cross-sections — it is the industry standard.

In a three-phase rectifier the output tracks the HIGHEST phase at every instant: in the half-wave (3-diode) topology the ripple frequency rises to 150 Hz, and the peak-to-peak ripple is much smaller than single-phase; the filter capacitor shrinks.

The full-bridge (6-diode) topology gives 300 Hz ripple and a higher average DC; that is how the DC bus of motor drives is obtained.
